International Visitors Set Record in June Pumping More Than $10 Billion into the U.S. Economy

WASHINGTON—The U.S. Department of Commerce today released new travel data that shows international visitors spent more than $10 billion in the United States in June 2007, an all time high for the month of June, putting the U.S. on track for another record setting year.

“The continuous, positive increase in arrivals and spending underscores the strength of the U.S. as a tourism destination,” said Commerce Secretary Carlos M. Gutierrez. “This expansion is encouraging for the travel and tourism industry, which remains a key fixture of our economy. At this growth rate, the U.S. will set a new record for traveler spending in 2007.”

Highlights of June 2007 International Arrivals to the United States

  • International visitors spent more than $10 billion in June, representing a 14 percent increase from June 2006.
  • Through June, international visitors have spent just over $58 billion, compared to just under $53 billion during the same period in 2006.
  • The 3.8 million international visitors is a 12 percent increase over June 2006. Total visitation, 21.5 million, for the first six months of 2007 was over 8 percent from the same period in 2006.
  • Thirteen of the top 20 arrival markets have posted double-digit increases in the first six months of 2007.
  • Visitors from Canada grew nine percent over June 2006 with air arrivals up five percent and land arrivals up 10 percent.
  • Arrivals from Mexico (traveling to interior U.S. points) were up 25 percent in June 2007. This aggregate included air arrival, which is up 11 percent while land arrivals increased by 31 percent in June 2007.
  • Overseas arrivals (excluding Canada and Mexico) were up 12 percent over June 2006 and were up eight percent for 2007 compared to the first six months of 2006.
