Volunteer Service Initiatives

In his 2002 State of the Union address, President George W. Bush issued a national Call to Service urging all Americans to dedicate two years – or 4,000 hours – in service to others. He created the USA Freedom Corps to help Americans find opportunities to answer his call, and specifically recognized the following three areas of need: responding in case of crisis at home, rebuilding our communities, and extending American compassion throughout the world.

The USA Freedom Corps is working to strengthen and reform federally-supported service programs, break down barriers to service opportunities through all federal agencies, and work with community-serving organizations to expand opportunities that better meet important needs in our communities.

Every American who wants to serve their country through volunteering should have the opportunity to do so. The USA Freedom Corps is continually working to expand and enhance its volunteer network to provide volunteer service opportunities for Americans of all ages and backgrounds. The following initiatives of the USA Freedom Corps are just some of the ways that Americans are finding new opportunities to serve:
