Telemetry

Data from the KEO mooring are telemetered in near-real-time via Service Argos utilizing the NOAA polar-orbiting satellites. The buoy data are processed nightly at PMEL, where calibration coefficients and quality controls are applied. In addition, an Iridium Positioning System (IPS) transmits tension of the mooring line and GPS position of the mooring once every three days. Starting in June 2005, a separate Iridium based CO₂ system will be added .

The KEO mooring transmits daily mean values from the previous day as well as spot values of high resolution surface meteorological data that are transmitted opportunistically. In order to reduce battery requirements and Service Argos charges, the KEO mooring transmits for 8 hours per day, from 2000-0000 and 0200-0600 UTC.

Real-time updates of daily mean data are made to the KEO web pages on a daily basis. Complete high temporal resolution data (10-minute or 2-minute depending on sensor) are available in delayed mode from the KEO data delivery page after recovery of the moorings.

Starting in June 2005, daily mean ocean temperature and up to 4 hourly surface wind, relative humidity and air temperature observations will be submitted onto the Global Telecommunications System (GTS) by Service Argos.

Data will soon be available from the National Oceanographic Data Center in Washington DC, and the National Climatic Data Center in Asheville, North Carolina.
