U.S. Labor Department's OSHA and Holder Construction enter safety and health partnership for downtown Denver office building project

DENVER -- The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Holder Construction Co. have signed a strategic partnership agreement covering the new $58-million Hines 1515 Wynkoop Office Building project in downtown Denver. More than 400 construction workers will be employed in the project, which will take about two years to complete.

The partnership formalizes a cooperative agreement between Holder Construction and OSHA to maximize safety at this large-scale project. Holder Construction has committed to ensuring that: all subcontractors maintain a comprehensive written workplace safety and health program; all supervisors at the site will receive at least 10 hours of safety and health training; and injury and illness rates will be held well below national averages for the construction industry. Through the partnership, OSHA has agreed to provide the site with technical assistance and training.

"OSHA's mission is to protect America's working men and women with strategic partnerships - such as the one with Holder Construction - by seeking opportunities for us to work cooperatively with employers to keep employees safe and healthy," said Herb Gibson, OSHA's Denver Area Office director, who signed the partnership agreement on behalf of the agency.

"Holder Construction is a recognized leader in safety and health in the construction industry, and we are eager to support its efforts to keep employees injury free throughout the life of this project," added Gibson.

Strategic partnerships offer employers and employees a unique opportunity to move beyond traditional OSHA enforcement programs by working with the agency to successfully incorporate comprehensive safety and health programs into their total management systems. For additional information on strategic partnerships in Region 8, contact Bill Wright, OSHA's regional partnership and alliance coordinator in Denver, at 720-264-6572.

More than 1.2 million employees and more than 21,000 employers across the U.S. have participated with OSHA in 484 Strategic Partnerships since the program began in 1998.

Under the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, employers are responsible for providing safe and healthful workplaces for their employees. OSHA's role is to assure the safety and health of America's working men and women by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual process improvement in workplace safety and health.
