New OSHA Alliance Aims to Enhance Safety and Health for Young Workers in the Hudson Valley and Catskills

TARRYTOWN, N.Y. -- Educating young workers in Rockland, Orange, Ulster, Putnam and Northern Westchester counties about occupational safety and health is the goal of a newly-signed alliance among the Tarrytown and Albany offices of the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the Board of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES) and the New York State Department of Labor's On-Site Consultation Program (NYS ON-SITE).

Under the alliance, OSHA, BOCES and NYS ON-SITE will work jointly to provide BOCES members, students and others with information, guidance and training to help protect the safety and health of students and young workers, particularly in reducing and preventing exposure to falls, electrical, struck-by and caught between hazards, amputations, lead and silica exposures and workplace violence.

The alliance will include development of a safety and health curricula and delivery of OSHA's construction and general industry courses. OSHA will work to provide BOCES faculty with Train-the-Trainer courses so they can deliver OSHA safety and health classes to students and provide them with course completion cards.

"This is an excellent opportunity to provide tomorrow's workers with vital knowledge that will serve them well in the world of work," said Patricia K. Clark, OSHA's regional administrator. "These courses will equip them with the awareness and skills to identify and address on-the-job hazards before they cause injury or illness."

The agreement was signed by Clark; Diana Cortez, OSHA's Tarrytown area director; John Tomich, OSHA's Albany area director; BOCES District Superintendents Dr. James M. Ryan, (Rockland BOCES) and Dr. Robert J. Hannah (Orange-Ulster BOCES); Nick Lamberti, regional safety coordinator, Putnam/Northern Westchester BOCES (signing for District Superintendent Dr. James T. Langlois); and Michael Ballentine, manager, NYS ON-SITE. A photograph of the signing is available by e-mailing fitzgerald.edmund@dol.gov.
