Peoria Contractors Association, OSHA Pledge to Make Area Jobs and Worksites Safe

PEORIA, Ill. -- Working men and women in the Peoria area construction industry will find workplace safety a hot issue as the building season opens in 2004, with the application of a safety alliance signed between the Greater Peoria Contractors and Supplier Association (GPSCA) and the U.S. Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

The two groups signed a formal alliance on Tuesday, Jan. 20 at a GPSCA meeting in Peoria that will promote safe and healthful working conditions in the area. Aside from information sharing and increasing the daily emphasis on safety and health matters, the 325 member association will cooperate with OSHA to develop safety and health training on hazards associated with the construction industry as well as organizing stakeholder meetings to develop solutions for particular injury and illness prevention challenges.

"Construction occupations remain among the most hazardous in the nation," according to Peoria OSHA Area Director Peggy Zweber. "We know that one of the best ways to protect working men and women is to enlist the support of others. The GPSCA is a significant force in Peoria, and more than that, a respected leadership group that contractors, sub-contractors and suppliers look to for relevant information and solid advice. They've worked with us for the last 12 years on a local safety day, and now we're more than pleased to see this relationship maturing into having them as our allies in this effort."

GPSCA President Tim Erickson said, "We as a construction industry are excited about the alliance and the potential for improving training, education, outreach, communication and dialogue on workplace safety and health. This alliance is a voluntary cooperative relationship, which permits individual members of GPCSA to take construction safety to a higher level. The alliance puts a bold emphasis upon the user friendly side of OSHA and stimulates broader participation by a greater number of contractors." Erickson is also Vice President of Operations at Williams Brothers Construction.

Much more Alliance information can be found on OSHA's website, www.osha.gov. The new quarterly newsletter, "Alliance Program News" contains up-to-date alliance activities as well as other interesting and useful resources.
