Region 3 News Release: 04-55-PHI (osha-005) Date: Fri., Jan. 30, 2004 Contact: Leni Uddyback-Fortson Office: (215) 861-5102 New OSHA Partnership to Protect Workers During Weigh Station Construction on Route 78 BLOOMSBURY, N.J. -- Workers involved in truck weigh station construction on Route 78 will be safer thanks to a partnership recently formed among the U.S. Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), local labor unions, management and state government agencies in New Jersey. "The weigh station project involves varied operations that create numerous safety and health hazards," said Patricia K. Clark, regional administrator of OSHA in New York. "This partnership lays the foundation for ensuring that workers will stay safe on the job." OSHA Health and Safety partnerships are part of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the health and safety of workers through cooperative partnerships with trade associations, labor organizations and employers. OSHA's partners are the Railroad Construction Company, Inc., the International Union of Operating Engineers and Laborers International Union of North America, Locals 825 and 172/472, the New Jersey Department of Transportation and the New Jersey Department of Labor On-site Consultation Service. Partnership objectives include zero fatalities, reduction or elimination of hazards that can cause worker injuries and illnesses and full contractor compliance with incident prevention programs. The partners also aim to achieve a "DART" rate that is 25 percent below the national industry average. DART refers to work-related injuries and illnesses that cause Days Away from work, Restricted duties or Transfers to other duties. Led by the Railroad Construction Company, Inc., weigh station construction will take place concurrently with bridge and roadway reconstruction work. It is anticipated that approximately 150 workers will be employed at the peak of the project. Since 2001, OSHA has entered into more than 80 partnerships to prevent accidents and promote job health and safety.
