Juneau, AK
 (JPG) (1,076,058 bytes) ( 3,092 x 2,732 )
Juneau, population 31,000, is a port city and the capital of Alaska. It is the commercial and distribution center for the panhandle region of the state. Industries include government activities, fishing and fish processing, lumbering, mining, and tourism. Transportation to and from the city is principally by boat or airplane. Just north of the city is the Mendenhall Glacier. In 1880 Joseph Juneau and Richard Harris discovered gold in the area, which led to the development of the settlement as a gold-mining town. In 1970 Juneau’s boundaries were greatly extended, making it one of the largest communities in area in the United States. The image was acquired on April 28, 2002 and covers an area of 41.0 x 45.9 km. The image is centered at 58.3 degrees north latitude, 134.4 degrees west longitude.
