St. Lawrence Environment Natural Resource Damage Assessment
Sediment PCB and PAH Data Summary and Mapping Procedures
NOAA ORR is working in support of a natural resource damage assessment (NRDA) for the St. Lawrence River Environment. The NRDA is being carried out as a collaborative effort between Alcoa and General Motors (the Companies) and the natural resource trustees (Trustees). The following Trustees are participating in the St. Lawrence Environment NRDA:
· St. Regis Mohawk Tribe
· New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC)
· U.S. Dept. of the Interior, including U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (DOI; U.S. FWS)
· National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)
As part of the natural resource damage assessment for the St. Lawrence Environment, the Trustees are evaluating injury to the aquatic ecosystem within the assessment area as a result of contaminants released by the Companies. Sediment, an important component of the aquatic system, provides essential ecological services. PCB and PAH concentrations are the primary contaminants in assessment area sediment that are being reviewed and compiled. HEA models will be used to quantify injury and scale restoration projects.
