Scattered fires, represented by red pixels, are spread across southeastern Kazakhstan and northwestern China in this Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) image taken by the Terra satellite on April 1, 2004. The fires were probably started by farmers clearing their fields for spring planting, though much of the region still appears to be frozen. The large crescent of Balqash Lake, top right, is frosted with ice, and the “v” formed by the Borohoro Shan (top) and the Tian Shan (bottom) mountains is still crusted with snow.

South of the Tian Shan, the homogenous brown of China’s vast Taklimakan Desert fills the lower right corner of the image. The countries shown in this image include, clockwise from the upper right corner, China, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Kazakhstan.
