Streaks of dust were being blown southwest over the Red Sea from Saudi Arabia on December 28, 2004, when the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite acquired this image. The storm is larger than it may appear at first. Broad clouds of dust blow diagonally across the Nubian Desert in eastern Sudan on the west side of the Red Sea, though against the tan land, the light-colored dust is hard to see. Along the bottom edge of the image, MODIS detected a few fires in Ethiopia. The fires have been marked with red dots. Between Ethiopia and Sudan, on the shore of the Red Sea is Eritrea. Egypt is in the upper left corner of the image.
