A plume of steam or ash is still visible from Mt. Etna in this SeaWiFS image captured on July 27, 2001. The plume is mingling with aerosols from other sources such as the Sahara and Europe. The somewhat clearer air over the Baltic Sea reveals the phytoplankton bloom that continues to fill much of the surface water.
