President George W. Bush will meet Susan Landis when he arrives in Beckley, West Virginia on Friday, July 16, 2004. Landis is an active volunteer with several organizations in her community including the Raleigh County Make it Shine beautification project.

President Bush hascalled on all Americans to volunteer two years or 4,000 hours over the course of their lifetimes, and hecreated USA Freedom Corpsto help foster a culture of service, citizenship, and responsibility. Since January 2002, President Bush has met with hundreds of individuals around the country, like Landis, who are answering the call to volunteer service.

As avolunteer with the Make it Shine beautification project, Landis develops walking trails, organizes trash clean-up days and adopt-a-highway programs, and helps transform abandoned buildings into useable space for the county. She works with the Helping Hands food pantry to provide canned goods for needy families in the area, and helps organize a clothing drive for underprivileged children each fall. Landis is active with the Beckley Rotary Club and is currently organizing fundraisers to help build a local hospice house. For the past 20 years she has been a volunteer with Friends of the Library. Since its inception in 1984 until January 2004, Landis served in a voluntary leadership capacity at the Beckley Area Foundation, where she is currently employed. This community foundation serves the charitable needs of Raleigh and surrounding counties.

USA Freedom Corps has launched “A Call to Summer Service”, an initiative to encourage Americans to spend a part of their summer in volunteer service. Through “A Call to Summer Service,” citizens are reminded that the summer months are an excellent time to answer the President’s Call to Service, strengthen their communities, and extend the compassion and greatness of America. Interested volunteers can find ideas for summer volunteering and information on how to get started at www.usafreedomcorps.gov.
