The U.S. Geological Survey participated with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and other Federal and State agencies to evaluate the effects of different farming systems. Investigations were conducted in five Management Systems Evaluation Areas---in Missouri, Minnesota, Nebraska, Ohio, and Iowa. The goal was to reduce the effect of agriculture on surface- and ground-water quality through implementation of improved farming practices.
