National Drug Intelligence Center Releases Twenty-seven Drug Market Analysis Reports for the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas

On July 2, 2007, the National Drug Intelligence Center (NDIC), a component of the Department of Justice, will release twenty-seven 2007 Drug Market Analysis reports. These annual reports were prepared at the request of the Executive Office of the President's Office of National Drug Control Policy for High Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas (HIDTA) throughout the country. They provide strategic overviews of the illicit drug situation in the respective HIDTA market area and highlight significant trends and law enforcement concerns related to the trafficking and abuse of illicit drugs.

Thus far in fiscal year 2007, NDIC has produced several major national level reports beginning with the National Drug Threat Assessment 2007 which details national drug trafficking and abuse trends within the United States, particularly with respect to cocaine, heroin, marijuana, MDMA, methamphetamine, pharmaceuticals and other dangerous drugs. The assessment identifies the primary drug threats to the nation, tracks drug availability throughout the country, and analyzes trafficking and distribution patterns of illicit drugs within the United States. It evaluates the threat posed by illegal drugs such as, comparing availability, production and cultivation, transportation, distribution, and demand.

In November, the NDIC published the National Methamphetamine Threat Assessment 2007. The report is a comprehensive assessment of the threat posed to the United States by the trafficking and abuse of methamphetamine.

In February, NDIC published the Domestic Cannabis Cultivation Assessment 2007, a national-level strategic assessment of cannabis cultivation and marijuana production in the United States. This assessment addresses major trends in domestic cannabis cultivation, both indoor and outdoor, with a focus on cannabis cultivation operations in primary areas of production at the state and county levels. This report covers wide-ranging issues regarding cultivation operations, including planting and harvesting seasons; use or presence of weapons, booby traps, and countersurveillance; resultant environmental damage; and the operational trends of drug trafficking organizations and other criminal groups.

These and other reports produced by NDIC and available to the public are posted on our web site at http://www.usdoj.gov/ndic/index.htm.
