PROJECT DESCRIPTION
ESMD Space Grant Faculty Project

[Faculty Higher Education]
[Available: Nationally]

THE Exploration Systems Mission Directorate Space Grant Faculty Project provides two opportunities for faculty.

Summer Fellowship

The ESMD Space Grant Faculty Project funds ten faculty members. Each fellow is paired with one of the ten NASA centers for five weeks to help gather senior design project ideas and learn about internship opportunities related to exploration in support of the ESMD Space Grant Program. Participants do not conduct research.

Development of Senior Design Project

The purpose of this project is to create ESMD senior design courses. During the summer of 2007, the ESMD Space Grant Faculty Project resulted in an accumulation of a large number of ESMD senior design projects from ten NASA centers; however, the actual plan of how to administer such projects is still in a developmental stage. This Senior Design Project will complement the current ESMD Space Grant Faculty Project by developing and pilot-testing a viable approach for successfully implementing senior design courses into higher educational institutions throughout the United States.

The course will span an academic year (approximately 32 weeks) and be developed in conjunction with a current ESMD-NASA researcher. The end product will be a "packaged" senior design course that can easily be incorporated into universities across the nation.

Program Goal

The goal of this project is to establish a close relationship between the centers and the consortia, as well as to allow for better matches to make effective and substantial contributions to NASA's ESMD work. By placing faculty from Space Grant Consortium-affiliated universities at the centers, NASA will be able to:
  1. Provide the Space Grant Consortia an opportunity to strengthen relations with the NASA centers.
  2. Create a better understanding for all involved (center, Space Grant, faculty, education office, as well as the eventual students the faculty will teach) of how they each can contribute to enable the U.S. Space Exploration Policy.
  3. Enable the faculty to better prepare their students to meet NASA needs.

Eligibility

The Faulty Project participant must meet the following criteria:
--Be a U.S. citizen.
--Be currently employed at a higher education institution in the United States or Puerto Rico.
--Have an academic background in a field of expertise that complements ESMD related research.
