Research Affiliate appointments are made to recognize working relationships between researchers in the academic community and their scientific or engineering counterparts at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and to enable the affiliates to conduct research activities for pre-agreed periods of time at JPL. Such appointments foster interaction with the academic community, but without fee, salary, stipend or grants for the academic researcher. In some cases, recent retirees may be appointed as Research Affiliates to continue their collaboration with JPL colleagues. Research Affiliates are formally appointed by the JPL Chief Scientist.
