Mike Tangora assumed duties as Deputy Assistant Commandant for Acquisition and Director of Acquisition Services on July 13, 2007. Prior to assuming this role, he served as Deputy Program Executive Officer for the Coast Guard’s Integrated Deepwater System beginning in November 2006. A Level III Acquisition and Program Management Professional, he came to the Coast Guard from the Navy where he served as the Deputy Program Manager for the Navy’s Aircraft Carrier Programs (PMS312).
Prior to his promotion to Deputy Program Manager for Aircraft Carriers in April 2003, Mr. Tangora served as the Deputy Assistant Program Manager for Aircraft Carrier Modernization and was responsible for the development and implementation of the Smart Carrier Program. Under his leadership, the Smart Carrier program was the recipient of a Defense Acquisition Executive Certificate of Achievement in January 2005.
He was previously assigned as the Assistant Program Manager and Technical Director for Surface Mine Warfare Systems Programs (PMS407), where he was responsible for the Navy's total mine inventory as well as for all mine warfare sonar and autonomous vehicles used to persecute enemy mines.
From December 1989 to February 2000, Mr. Tangora served as the Assistant Program Manager for Mine Warfare Ship Programs (PMS303) where he was responsible for the construction, fleet introduction and in-service management of the MCM1 Class shipbuilding program.
Mr. Tangora was previously detailed to support Supervisor of Shipbuilding, Long Beach, with the construction of FFG37-61 at TODD Shipyard San Pedro, resulting in his promotion to NAVSEA in 1987 where he managed the in-service support of the Perry Class Frigate (FFG7) program. During this assignment he participated in the reactivation of USS Stark (FFG 31) following the Iraqi Missile Strike and USS Samuel B Roberts (FFG 58) following the Iranian Mine Strike.
He began his career in 1981 in the Design Division at Long Beach Naval Shipyard and was instrumental in the structural design work for the reactivation of USS NEW JERSEY (BB62). In this role he also provided significant support to the Tomahawk Box Launcher design.
Mr. Tangora holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering (Major: structural engineering) from Michigan Technological University (1981).
He was twice the recipient of the Navy Superior Civilian Service Award: in 2005, for his role in modifying aircraft carrier maintenance / modernization requirements and developing the Navy’s Fleet Response Plan; and in 1997, for developing a method to reduce the magnetic signature of the MCM Class by over 50 percent. He was also recognized as NAVSEA’s “Engineer of the Year” in 1999.
