Goal is to reduce work-related injuries and illnesses among younger employees FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- The U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is forming a new alliance with the Palm Beach County School Board and the Gold Coast Chapter of the American Society of Safety Engineers to reduce work-related injuries and illnesses among younger employees in South Florida. According to recent Bureau of Labor Statistics national data, 124 fatalities occurred among employees between the ages of 16 and 19 in 2006, and more than 39,000 suffered serious but nonfatal injuries at work. "These young people are our most valuable resource and this nation’s economic future," said Darlene Fossum, OSHA’s area director in Ft. Lauderdale. "It is up to parents, schools and employers to ensure they are protected, properly trained and educated on the importance safety and health plays in their personal safety and career development." A key goal of the alliance is the development of training and education programs for the Seminole Ridge Community High School Construction Academy and at other schools. The programs will comprise construction industry safety and health principles and practices, development of effective safety and health management systems, and expertise in communicating such information to teachers, students and staff. Chao’s ongoing efforts to improve the safety and health of employees through cooperative partnerships with trade associations, labor organizations, employers and government agencies. OSHA currently has more than 500 alliances throughout the nation with organizations committed to fostering safety and health in the workplace. In fiscal year 2007, OSHA’s Directorate of Training and Education, through its OSHA Training Institute Education Centers and Outreach Training Program, trained a total of 550,000 people. Specifically, there were 522,000 people trained in OSHA’s Outreach Training 10-hour and 30-hour courses. OSHA has improved workplace safety and health over the past 37 years. This success is reflected in the latest data (2006) showing the lowest national injury and illness incidence rate that the Bureau of Labor Statistics has ever recorded. OSHA will continue to work diligently to focus its resources where they will have the most impact in assuring that every working man and woman returns home safely every day.
