Definitions:
Foreign-born persons include all people who indicated they were either a U.S. citizen by naturalization or they were not a citizen of the United States. Persons born abroad of American parentsor born in Puerto Rico or other U.S. Island Areas are not considered foreign born.
Census 2000 did not ask about immigration status. The population surveyed includes all people who indicated that the U.S. was their usual place of residence on the census date. The foreign-born population includes: immigrants (legal permanent residents), temporary migrants (e.g., students), humanitarian migrants (e.g., refugees), and unauthorized migrants (people illegally residing in the United States). Other census questions determined the country of birth, year of entry, and citizenship status for the foreign born.
The percentage shown is obtained by dividing the count of foreign-born persons by the total population.
Scope and Methodology:
These data are collected on the census long form. Roughly one in every six households received this sample questionnaire. The data are estimates and are subject to sampling variability. Information on the accuracy of data and sampling is in Chapter 8 in Summary File 3 documentation.
