Alliance signing slated for Sept. 19 at college's Corporate & Community Training Institute FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is forming a new alliance with Indian River State College's Corporate & Community Training Institute (CCTI) to reduce work-related injuries and illnesses among younger employees in South Florida. The public and media are invited to attend an alliance signing ceremony on Sept. 19 at 11 a.m. EDT at Indian River State College, 3209 Virginia Ave., Building E, Room 123, Fort Pierce, Fla. "Properly trained employees are less likely to engage in unsafe acts and are better equipped to recognize hazardous situations," said Darlene Fossum, OSHA's area director in Ft. Lauderdale. "By linking Indian River State College's expertise in teaching younger employees with OSHA's commitment to workplace safety and health, we can significantly reduce workplace injuries." A key goal of the alliance is the development of training and education programs for the CCTI at Indian River State College. Emphasis will be on construction industry safety and health principles and practices, development of effective safety and health management systems, and communication of safety and health information to students and staff. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the safety and health of employees through cooperative partnerships with trade associations, labor organizations, employers and government agencies. OSHA currently has more than 500 alliances throughout the nation with organizations committed to fostering safety and health in the workplace. OSHA has improved workplace safety and health over the past 37 years. This success is reflected in the latest data (2006) showing the lowest national injury and illness incidence rate that the Bureau of Labor Statistics has ever recorded. OSHA will continue to work diligently to focus its resources where they will have the most impact in assuring that every working man and woman returns home safely every day. Under the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, employers are responsible for providing a safe and healthy workplace for their employees.
