Agency Proposes Penalties Totaling $45,000 JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The U.S. Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has cited Healthcare Services Group, Inc. and proposed $45,000 in penalties, for alleged safety and health hazards observed during a May 7, 2004 inspection of the company's St. Augustine, Fla., laundry service facility. "This company has been cited repeatedly for similar conditions at its facilities, nationwide. Yet, employees continue to be exposed to known hazards," said James D. Borders, OSHA's Jacksonville area director. OSHA issued two repeat citations to the company, with total proposed penalties of $45,000, for failing to provide Hepatitis B vaccine to employees exposed to blood or other potentially infectious materials and for failing to provide suitable eye-wash stations, in appropriate locations, so employees who are exposed to corrosive chemicals can quickly drench their eyes. The agency issues a repeat violation when an employer has been cited previously for a substantially similar condition and the citation has become a final order of the independent Occupational Safety and Health Review Commission. The Huntingdon Valley, Pa., based-company has 15 working days to contest the OSHA citations and proposed penalties before the Occupational Safety and Health Review Commission. The worksite inspection was conducted by staff from OSHA's Jacksonville area office, located at 1851 Executive Center Drive, Room 227; phone: (904) 232-2895. OSHA's role is to assure the safety and health of America's workers by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual improvement in workplace safety and health. The U.S. Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration conducted almost 40,000 inspections in fiscal year 2003, an increase of more than 2,000 over fiscal year 2002 inspection levels; more than half focused on high-hazard industries.
