OSHA Program In Kansas Targets Concrete Industry

WICHITA, Kan. -- A statewide program to identify, evaluate, and control the hazards associated with exposure to the manufacturing, production, mixing and delivery of concrete in the workplace is being implemented throughout Kansas by the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

This Local Emphasis Program (LEP) targets general industry businesses in Kansas that manufacture, produce, mix or deliver concrete or concrete related products. The program focuses on providing information and outreach materials to identified employers followed by programmed facility inspections. Worksite inspections may not be conducted at some businesses that received a full service safety and health consultation visit.

The combined safety and health inspections under the LEP will be conducted according to an established procedure and will address all aspects of potential concrete-related work exposures, including silica and noise exposures. Hazards from confined space, lockout/tagout, electrical and machine guarding will also be evaluated. OSHA will review the employer's written documentation supporting the existence of workplace safety and health programs, specifically recordkeeping and records required as a result of worker exposure to concrete-related hazards.

Data collected under the LEP will be submitted by November 30, 2004, and evaluated by OSHA to determine the effectiveness of the program.

Additional information about the program may be obtained by calling the OSHA Wichita Area Office at 316-269-6644 or toll-free in Kansas only 1-800-362-2896.

OSHA is dedicated to assuring worker safety and health. Safety and health add value to business, the workplace and life. For more information, visit www.osha.gov.
