Erika A. Waters, PhD, MPH

Erika Waters is a postdoctoral fellow in the National Cancer Institute's (NCI) Cancer Prevention Fellowship Program (CPFP). As a member of the Health Communications and Informatics Research Branch (HCIRB), her responsibilities include conducting original research and collaborating with NCI staff members on research projects, publications and presentations. Dr. Waters' research interests include investigating the relationships among risk perception, risk communication and behavior in the context of preventive behavior and medical decision making. In addition, Dr. Waters has a growing interest in the ways in which risk information, presented on the Internet, influence risk perceptions and health behaviors.

Dr. Waters first joined NCI in 2002 as an intern in the Health Communications Internship Program. After the six-month program ended, she returned to Rutgers University and completed her Ph.D. in social-health psychology. Dr. Waters joined the NCI's Cancer Prevention Fellowship Program in 2006. The following year was devoted to obtaining her Masters of Public Health degree and to receiving intensive training in cancer prevention and control. Upon completion, Dr. Waters returned to the Health Communications and Informatics Research Branch in September 2007.

Dr. Waters received her Ph.D. in social-health psychology from Rutgers University, her MPH from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, and her B.S. in psychology from Arizona State University.
