U.S. Labor Department's OSHA, New Hampshire Auto Dealers Association and state of New Hampshire form automotive industry safety and health alliance

CONCORD, N.H. - Reducing work-related hazards and enhancing safety and health for employees in New Hampshire's automotive sales, repair and service industries are the goals of a new alliance among the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the New Hampshire Automobile Dealers Association Workers' Compensation Trust (NHADA WCT) and the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services' (DES) safety consultation program.

"Knowledge of work-related hazards and safe work practices is key to identifying and eliminating occupational hazards and the injuries and illnesses that can result from such hazards," said Rosemarie Ohar, OSHA's area director for New Hampshire. "This alliance seeks to equip employers and employees in New Hampshire's automotive sales, repair and service industry with that vital information."

The alliance partners jointly will develop training and education programs for new hires in the auto sales, repair and service industry regarding job-related safety and health issues. They also will work together to address specific safety and health issues identified by the alliance, communicate such information to NHADA WCT members and encourage those members to build relationships with OSHA's Concord Area Office to address safety and health issues.

OSHA safety and health alliances are part of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the health and safety of employees through cooperative partnerships with trade associations, labor organizations, employers and government agencies. OSHA currently has more than 500 alliances throughout the nation with organizations committed to fostering safety and health in the workplace.

This alliance was signed by OSHA's Ohar, NHADA President Peter J. McNamara and DES Consultation Program Manager Stephen Breyer. For more information about OSHA alliances in New Hampshire, contact the compliance assistance specialist in OSHA's Concord Area Office at 603-225-1629.

Under the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, employers are responsible for providing a safe and healthy workplace for their employees. OSHA's role is to promote the safety and health of America's working men and women by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual process improvement in workplace safety and health.
