ST. LOUIS -- The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Gateway Constructors have formed a partnership designed to reduce fatalities and serious injuries and to ensure employee safety during the new Interstate 64 Design Build Project in St. Louis. "This partnership combines the cooperative efforts of labor, management and government to effectively address all facets of jobsite safety on the Design Build Project," said Charles E. Adkins, CIH, OSHA's regional administrator in Kansas City, Mo. "Working together allows for better use of OSHA resources and innovation in safety management, and encourages more participation in the safety process from the construction community." The goals of the partnership agreement are to help ensure that the reconstruction of Interstate 64 from west of Spoede Road to east of Kingshighway Boulevard includes a safe work environment for all employees and that the general public is protected. "As the Design Build contractor, along with our subcontractors, we are very pleased to enter into this partnership with OSHA," said George Harvey, Gateway Constructors' project manager. "We know that this close working relationship will help us continue to protect our employees in the best possible way." OSHA's Strategic Partnership Program is part of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the health and safety of workers through cooperative relationships with trade associations, labor organizations, employers and employees. More than 1.2 million employees and more than 33,000 employers nationwide have participated with OSHA in 455 Strategic Partnerships since the program began in 1998.
