Home Care Health and Safety Course for Safety Trainers

CHICAGO -- To help safety trainers teach home care workers and managers about occupational hazards they frequently face, a federal and a state agency are teaming up with the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) to present three two-day instructional sessions in May. The training will be held at the UIC School of Public Health West and at the Multi University Center in Oak Brook, beginning May 9.

The program is sponsored by a partnership among the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the On-Site Safety and Health Consultation Program of the Illinois Department of Commerce and Community Affairs, and the UIC School of Public Health, Illinois Occupational and Environmental Education and Research Center.

"The course will cover a wide range of topics dealing with home care health and safety hazards," said Michael G. Connors, OSHA regional administrator in Chicago. "It will cover the Home Care Health and Safety Advisor training tool, small group health and safety presentation skills, record keeping, ergonomics, chemical hazards, driving hazards, storage and disposal of infectious and hazardous waste, and violence prevention."

Each session consists of two consecutive 8-hour classes. The courses will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on the following dates:

  • Thursday, May 9, and Friday, May 10, at the UIC School of Public Health West, 2121 W. Taylor Street, Chicago, Ill.;
  • Tuesday, May 14, and Wednesday, May 15, at the UIC School of Public Health West, 2121 W. Taylor Street, Chicago, Ill.;
  • Thursday, May 23, and Friday, May 24, at the Multi University Center, 1010 Jorie Blvd., Oak Brook, Ill.

The fee for the two-day course is $25, which includes refreshments and lunch. Classes are limited to 25 participants for each session. Advance registration is required. To register, contact Joe Zanoni, UIC School of Public Health, at (312) 996-2613.
