PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Ensuring safe and healthful working conditions for Rhode Island's marine trades workers is the goal of a newly signed alliance among the U.S. Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the R.I. Department of Public Health's Occupational Health and Safety Consultation Program and the Rhode Island Marine Trades Association (RIMTA). OSHA health and safety alliances are part of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the health and safety of workers through cooperative partnerships with employers, trade associations and labor. The Rhode Island Marine Trades Association represents over 220 businesses in the state's marine industry. Its member companies and organizations include boat builders, boatyards and marinas, engineering and consulting firms, dock builders, and boat hauling, service and storage facilities. Participants will develop safety training programs for marine trades managers and workers covering chemical, noise, electrical and fall hazards. Courses will include chemical safety, respiratory protection, noise, fall protection and electrical safety. Participants will also promote and encourage RIMTA members and worksites to participate in OSHA's cooperative programs, such as the Voluntary Protection Program (VPP), safety consultation and the Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program (SHARP). "The marine trades encompass a wide range of occupations," said Mary Hoye, OSHA's area director for Rhode Island. "This alliance is an excellent opportunity for us to work together to equip workers with the knowledge and skills to effectively identify and address on-the-job hazards." The alliance was signed June 21 in Warwick. Signatories were Hoye; James Gamelin, project manager, R.I. Department of Health Occupational Health and Safety 21(d) Consultation program; and Chris Ruhling, who signed for Ken Kubic, president of the Rhode Island Marine Trades Association. OSHA has created more than 325 alliances with organizations committed to fostering safety and health in the workplace.
