Robert W. Cox, PhD
Robert W. Cox Photo null Dr. Cox is the leader of the Scientific and Statistical Computing Core (SSCC) in the NIMH Intramural Research Program. Before going to graduate school, he worked in industry for 7 years, working on numerical computation in the fields of radar imaging, structural engineering, and spacecraft navigation. He holds a PhD in Applied Mathematics from the California Institute of Technology (1988), and did postdoctoral research for 2 years at Los Alamos National Laboratory. He then was an Assistant Professor in the Mathematics and Computer Science departments at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, before moving to the Biophysics Research Institute of the Medical College of Wisconsin in 1993. He left the Medical College of Wisconsin at the rank of Associate Professor to join the NIMH IRP in 2001.
Research Interests
The SSCC's main "product" is the AFNI software package, which is used for display and analysis of functional MRI (FMRI) 3D and 4D data sets. The SSCC provides training in the use of AFNI and consultation on data analysis issues in FMRI. Dr Cox started developing AFNI in 1994 at the behest of psychologist colleagues at the Medical College of Wisconsin, who needed a way to visualize their 3D brain mapping results. AFNI is now used at many research sites to support FMRI research; images are piped straight from the scanner into the analysis program and brain activation maps are calculated and displayed while the image acquisitions are still in progress. Dr Cox is also interested in FMRI statistical analysis issues, in MR image reconstruction and processing, and in developing interoperability between FMRI data analysis software tools.
