|
President George W. Bush will meet Terri Ross when he arrives in Sioux City, Iowa, on Monday, November 1, 2004. Ross, 56, is an active volunteer, teachinga quilting program for Girls Incorporated of Sioux City, Iowa.
President Bush has called on all Americans to volunteer two years or 4,000 hours over the course of their lifetimes, and hecreated USA Freedom Corpsto help foster a culture of service, citizenship, and responsibility. Since March 2002, President Bush has met with more than 350 individuals around the country, like Ross, who are answering the call to volunteer service.
Ross teaches quilting to approximately 25 girls a year. Some of the quilts are donated to charities or fundraising auctions. Girls Incorporated is a national nonprofit youth organization that provides educational programs to millions of girls, particularly those in high-risk areas. In 1987, Ross started Siouxland Samplers, a quilting guild that sponsors Operation Sunshine. The quilters have made and given away more than 3,000 quilts to women’s shelters, hospital burn units, and law enforcement agencies.
Through USA Freedom Corps, President Bush wants to help every American answer the Call to Service by strengthening and expanding service opportunities to protect our homeland, support our communities, and extend American compassion around the world. Interested volunteers can find information at www.usafreedomcorps.gov or by calling 1-877-USA-CORPS.
