President Bush to Recognize New Hampshire Woman for Dedication to Volunteer Service

President George W. Bush met Joannie Barrett upon arrival in Manchester, New Hampshire, on Friday, October 29, 2004. Barrett, 52, is an active volunteer with the Adult Literacy Program, "Learn to Read," at the Manchester City Library.

President George W. Bush will meet Joannie Barrett when he arrives in Manchester, New Hampshire, on Friday, October 29, 2004. Barrett, 52, is an active volunteer with the Adult Literacy Program, "Learn to Read," at the Manchester City Library.

President Bush has called on all Americans to volunteer two years or 4,000 hours over the course of their lifetimes, and hecreated USA Freedom Corps to help foster a culture of service, citizenship, and responsibility. Since March 2002, President Bush has met with more than 350 individuals around the country, like Barrett, who are answering the call to volunteer service.

Barrett has been involved in the Adult Literacy Program for two years, and is now helping her second student, a 24-year-old, improve his reading skills. Learn to Read/ProLiteracy America offers free tutoring for adults in reading, writing, and lifelong learning. Barrett is also the volunteer chairman of the board of trustees at the Manchester City Library and helps with children's programs and special events. In addition, she is a volunteer at the Greater Manchester Family YMCA and at her daughter’s school.

Through USA Freedom Corps, President Bush wants to help every American answer the Call to Service by strengthening and expanding service opportunities to protect our homeland, support our communities, and extend American compassion around the world. Interested volunteers can find information at www.usafreedomcorps.gov or by calling 1-877-USA-CORPS.
