President Bush to Recognize Florida Man for Dedication to Volunteer Service

President George W. Bush met Dr. Larry Smith upon arrival in Gainesville, Florida, on Sunday, October 31, 2004. Smith, 49, is an active volunteer with the Boys and Girls Club of Northwest Gainesville.

President George W. Bush will meet Dr. Larry Smith when he arrives in Gainesville, Florida, on Sunday, October 31, 2004. Smith, 49, is an active volunteer with the Boys and Girls Club of Northwest Gainesville.

President Bush has called on all Americans to volunteer two years or 4,000 hours over the course of their lifetimes, and hecreated USA Freedom Corps to help foster a culture of service, citizenship, and responsibility. Since March 2002, President Bush has met with more than 350 individuals around the country, like Smith, who are answering the call to volunteer service.

Smith has led efforts to improve athletic facilities at the club through fundraising, donations, and building improvement projects. He has been a coach for the Boys and Girls Club football and basketball teams. Smith has also arranged for transportation and tickets to collegiate sporting events for Boys and Girls Club youth. In addition, Smith has coached basketball and soccer for YMCA and Gainesville City League teams. Smith also served one year on the Alachua County School Board task force to help improve educational opportunities for students.

Through USA Freedom Corps, President Bush wants to help every American answer the Call to Service by strengthening and expanding service opportunities to protect our homeland, support our communities, and extend American compassion around the world. Interested volunteers can find information at www.usafreedomcorps.gov or by calling 1-877-USA-CORPS.
