President George W. Bush will meet Tony Salem when he arrives in Des Moines, Iowa, on Monday, October 4, 2004. Salem, 69, is an active volunteer with the Children and Family Urban Ministries (CFUM), which addresses the needs of economically-disadvantaged school-age children and their families on the north side of Des Moines.

President Bush hascalled on all Americans to volunteer two years or 4,000 hours over the course of their lifetimes, and hecreated USA Freedom Corpsto help foster a culture of service, citizenship, and responsibility. Since March 2002, President Bush has met with more than 300 individuals around the country, like Salem, who are answering the call to volunteer service.

For the past six years, Salem has been a volunteer at CFUM. Four days a week, he volunteers with the program's Breakfast Club, which serves meals and offers activities to approximately 65 children every weekday morning. Once a month, Salem also cooks meals for the program’s Supper Club. In addition, he is the treasurer for CFUM’s board of directors. CFUM is a mission agency of the Iowa Conference of the United Methodist Church. The program serves breakfast and supper year-round, and hosts after-school and summer youth programs.

Through USA Freedom Corps, President Bush wants to help every American answer the Call to Service by strengthening and expanding service opportunities to protect our homeland, support our communities, and extend American compassion around the world. Interested volunteers can find information at www.usafreedomcorps.gov or by calling 1-877-USA-CORPS.
