President Bush to Recognize Greensboro Senior for Dedication to Service

President George W. Bush met Jane Lambert upon arrival in Greensboro. Lambert is a North Carolina native who has been an active volunteer in her community for more than half a century.

President George W. Bush will meet Jane Lambert when he arrives in Greensboro on Thursday. Lambert is a North Carolina native who has been an active volunteer in her community for more than half a century.

In his State of the Union address, President Bush called on all Americans to dedicate at least two years of their lives—the equivalent of 4,000 hours—in service to their communities, our country and the world. President Bush is recognizing individuals around the country who are answering the call to service, and will recognize Lambert as an example of the dedication to service he is hoping to instill in all Americans through his USA Freedom Corps initiative.

For more than fifty years Lambert has volunteered to help children. She was active in her children's Girl Scout troop and the PTA at their school. During the mid 1970s, when integration and bussing were issues of concern in her community, Lambert directed a recreation program for minority children.

Lambert is also active in her church. She has served as a Sunday school teacher, a volunteer in the church's outreach program, and in various church leadership positions. She has helped to settle two refugee families from Bosnia, and serves as the churchÕs Mobile Meals Day Chair. As the Mobile Meals Day chair, Lambert organizes volunteers to deliver meals to senior citizens one day a month. Lambert and her husband also volunteer as docents at the Greensboro Historical Museum. As docents, they work with school children to enhance their learning experience.

President Bush created the USA Freedom Corps office at the White House to foster an American culture of service, citizenship and responsibility. Through the USA Freedom Corps, President Bush wants to help every American answer the call to service by strengthening and expanding service opportunities to protect our homeland, support our communities and extend American compassion around the world. Interested volunteers can find information on the USA Freedom Corps at www.usafreedomcorps.gov or by calling 1-877-USA-Corps.
