President Bush to Recognize Atlanta Retiree for Dedication to Serving their Cancer Patients

President George W. Bush met Robert Langley upon arrival in Atlanta, Georgia, on Thursday, February 20, 2003. Langley is a longtime volunteer with Hospice Atlanta and the American Cancer Society’s Road to Recovery program.

President George W. Bush will meet Robert Langley when he arrives in Atlanta, Georgia, on Thursday, February 20, 2003. Langley is a longtime volunteer with Hospice Atlanta and the American Cancer Society’s Road to Recovery program.

Earlier this year, President Bush celebrated the first anniversary of the USA Freedom Corps – his initiative to engage all Americans in service to their neighbors and their Nation. President Bush is recognizing individuals around the country who are answering the call to service and will recognize Langley as an example of the dedication to service he is hoping to instill in all Americans through his USA Freedom Corps initiative.

For the past 10 years, Langley has volunteered his time as a driver and driver coordinator with the American Cancer Society’s Road to Recovery program. Road to Recovery volunteers offer transportation to cancer patients undergoing treatment. As a driver and the driver coordinator for several counties, including Clayton, Henry, and Fayette, Langley coordinates as many as 25 patient trips a week. Through Hospice Atlanta, Langley offers care to patients who remain in their homes. He also helps bereavement counselors with office work. Langley has chosen to spend his retirement working with the American Cancer Society and Hospice Atlanta in order to give back to those who helped his family when his wife died of lung cancer.

President Bush created the USA Freedom Corps office at the White House to foster an American culture of service, citizenship and responsibility. Through the USA Freedom Corps, President Bush wants to help every American answer the call to service by strengthening and expanding service opportunities to protect our homeland, support our communities and extend American compassion around the world. Interested volunteers can find information on the USA Freedom Corps at www.usafreedomcorps.gov or by calling 1-877-USA-Corps.
