President Bush to Recognize Detroit Area Man for Dedication to Volunteer Service

President George W. Bush met Bradley Simmons upon arrival in Detroit, Michigan, on Monday, December 1, 2003. Simmons has been an active volunteer with Boy Scouts of America and Brother Rice High School for over 20 years.

President George W. Bush will meet Bradley Simmons upon arrival in Detroit, Michigan, on Monday, December 1, 2003. Simmons has been an active volunteer with Boy Scouts of America and Brother Rice High School for over 20 years.

Earlier this year, President Bush celebrated the first anniversary of the USA Freedom Corps – his initiative to engage all Americans in service to their neighbors and their nation. President Bush is recognizing individuals around the country, like Simmons, who are answering the call to volunteer service.

For more than 20 years, Simmons has volunteered as an adult scout leader with the Detroit Area Council of Boy Scouts of America. Each summer, he leads a group of Scouts on a week-long service trip to Mackinac Island Scout Service Camp. Throughout the week, Scouts raise and lower flags, act as guides and distribute information to the public at Fort Mackinac and other historic sites. Simmons also volunteers with Brother Rice High School and was the first alumnus to be inducted into the school's Hall of Fame. Simmons is an active member of Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Catholic Church in Beverly Hills, Michigan. For the past 24 years, Simmons has been an employee of the Ford Motor Company. Ford is a member company of Business Strengthening America (BSA), an effort to engage America’s companies and organizations in a campaign to encourage civic engagement and volunteer service.

President Bush created the USA Freedom Corps office at the White House to foster a culture of service, citizenship and responsibility. Through the USA Freedom Corps, President Bush wants to help every American answer the call to volunteer service by strengthening and expanding service opportunities to protect our homeland, support our communities and extend American compassion around the world. Interested volunteers can find opportunities in their own neighborhoods through the USA Freedom Corps web site at www.usafreedomcorps.gov or by calling 1-877-USA-CORPS.
