Airports to Celebrate 100 Years of Flight with Nationwide Customer Appreciation Day

Washington, D.C.
Dec. 11, 2003

On Dec. 17, North American airports will celebrate 100 years of manned flight through 'Airport Customer Appreciation Day.' The aviation world has undergone momentous changes since the early days of flight and recent times have been particularly challenging for all of those in the industry. In the past few years alone, passengers have adjusted to new security requirements, the effects of airline mergers and bankruptcies, reductions in customer services, as well as the impacts of war and health crises (SARS). This event recognizes the contributions of the Wright Brothers and those who have developed it over the years.

"North American airports generate more than $533 billion each year in total economic activity and now offer a full array of services to passengers," said ACI-NA President David Z. Plavin. "Today, our community airports are driven by the needs of our passengers. We understand that flying is a freedom and a choice - so with Dec. 17 and Customer Appreciation Day, airports pledge to ensure that serving passengers safely and securely remains our highest priority, " he added.

Activities during the nation-wide airport Customer Appreciation Day will range from historic photo displays, paper airplane contests, airplane model displays and educational lectures, to fireworks displays, air shows, actors portraying Orville and Wilbur Wright, and art contests. Giveaways are as far ranging as plastic wings and luggage tags to free concessions and airline tickets. Contact your local airport(s) for details and visit ACI-NA's web site for related information at http://www.aci-na.org/asp/committeeindes.asp?page=257.
