The new life-size sculpture that re-creates the Wright brothers' first flight will be officially dedicated at 11 a.m., Sunday, Dec.14, during ceremonies at the Wright Brothers National Memorial.
The bronze and stainless steel sculpture features the Wright flyer, with Orville Wright on board, as it started to leave the ground, Wilbur Wright running alongside the plane, and John Daniels, who photographed the historic moment. The sculpture is based on Daniels' picture of the Dec. 17, 1903, first flight, considered one of the most famous photographs in history.
Attending the event will be the artist, Stephen Smith, along with descendants of the Wright family and descendants of witnesses to the flight. The sculpture is located on the Colington Road side of the park.
