Air Force Displays Aviation Art at Union Station

Washington D.C.
May 14, 2003

Art featuring aircraft, individuals and events that played a crucial role in shaping the face of military aviation over the past 100 years will be on exhibit at Union Station's West Hall here from May 19 thru June 9.

The three-week art event involves paintings on public display for the first time. The Air Force Art Collection is typically displayed throughout the Pentagon, Air Force museums, and other selected venues. The Air Force Centennial of Flight office is proud to share this unique collection of aviation artwork with the public.

In addition to the works of art on display at Union Station, the Centennial of Flight Office will host guest lectures explaining the significance of select pieces of art along with guided tours of the artwork on display. Information on dates and times for the lectures, along with additional information on this and other events, are available on the Air Force Centennial of Flight web site at http://www.centennialofflight.af.mil.

The Air Force Association is also hosting educational workshops for 130 Arlington County, Va. middle school students in conjunction with the art exhibit. The June 4th workshops will feature activities that highlight the growth of flight during the first 100 years of aviation and the math and science skills necessary to become a successful aviator. These activities are designed to inspire a love of flight in students that could lead to interest in aircraft design, maintenance and piloting. Schools wishing to set up an educational workshop should contact the Air Force Centennial of Flight office.
