Integrative Cancer Biology Project (ICBP) and shRNA Validation Project

The shRNA Validation Project was sponsored by the Integrative Cancer Biology Project (ICBP) of the NCI. The ICBP is the NCI’s primary effort to apply a systems biology approach to the understanding and management of cancer. Begun in the fall of 2004, the ICBP is a consortium of nine centers across the country covering a broad field of science from genomics and cellular signaling to the micro-environment and tumor invasion. The ICBP integrates two major approaches: 1) a systematic interrogation of the cellular and molecular components of the transformed phenotype, and 2) the generation of mathematical models to predict biological and clinical outcomes. One of the main goals of the ICBP is to develop these model systems and validate them in defined biological and clinical settings. The ICBP also works with the bioinformatics community, including caBIG, to facilitate the distribution and integration of the data and models generated within the consortium. This is especially complex when working across a number of different time and space scales. In recognition that this was the emergence of a new type of approach and would require new cross-discipline skill sets for investigators, the ICBP also has a robust education and outreach effort to train and support individuals in the field of integrative cancer biology. The ICBP also generates various resources for the research community such as the validated shRNA set. Additional information can be found on ICBP's website.
