Characterizing Ground-Water Flow and Chemical Transport in Fractured-Rock Aquifers

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and Australia's Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) are co-sponsoring the special session "Characterizing Ground-Water Flow and Chemical Transport in Fractured-Rock Aquifers" at the 2008 Western Pacific Geophysics Meeting in Cairns, Australia, on July 29-August 1, 2008. This session will present information on the characterization of ground-water flow and chemical transport in fractured-rock aquifers.

Session Description

This session is intended to bring together a multidisciplinary group of scientists who have been engaged in the characterization of ground-water flow and chemical transport in different types of fractured-rock environments, including igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary formations, and carbonate aquifers that have undergone karstification. ÊScientists engaged in geology, geophysics, geochemistry, and hydrogeology are encouraged to participate. The purpose of this session is to assess the current state of field and interpretive methods of characterizing ground-water flow and chemical transport in fractured rock over physical dimensions that may range from meters to tens of kilometers. Field and modeling investigations are encouraged. Of particular interest in this session is the integration of multiple sources of information that lead to an understanding of the geologic controls on ground-water flow and chemical transport in fractured-rock aquifers.
