Did you know that one in every 20 Americans over the age of 50 has peripheral arterial disease, or P.A.D.? It develops when arteries in your legs become clogged with plaque — fatty deposits that limit blood flow to your legs. This web site is the first national awareness campaign to increase public and health care provider awareness of P.A.D. and its association with other cardiovascular diseases.

The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) provides leadership for a national program in diseases of the heart, blood vessels, lung, and blood; blood resources; and sleep disorders. Since October 1997, the NHLBI has also had administrative responsibility for the NIH Woman's Health Initiative.
External link CDC State Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention Program
In 1998, the U.S. Congress provided funding for CDC to initiate a national, state-based heart disease and stroke prevention program with funding for eight states. Currently, 32 states and the District of Columbia are funded, 21 as capacity building programs and 12 as basic implementation programs.

MyPyramid's central message is "Steps to a Healthier You." MyPyramid replaces the Food Guide Pyramid introduced in 1992, and is part of an overall food guidance system that emphasizes the need for a more individualized approach to improving diet and lifestyle.
