SAMHSA's FBCI PROGRAM: WORKSHOP ARCHIVE

Grant Writing Workshop for Faith- and Community-Based Organizations / May 2005

On June 8 and 9, 2005, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) will convene the SAMHSA Grant Writing Workshop for Faith- and Community-Based Organizations in Schiller Park, Illinois. At the workshop, representatives of faith- and community-based organizations will learn about writing a strong and compliant grant application. Because the goal of the workshop is to increase the number of faith- and community-based organizations applying for and receiving SAMHSA grants, the training will focus on grant opportunities at SAMHSA. The workshop can accommodate a maximum of 25 participants. It will begin at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 8, and end at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 9, 2005.

In conjunction with the workshop, SAMHSA will convene a panel presentation, “Opportunities for Community- and Faith-Based Organizations.” The panel—including presentations by H. Westley Clark, M.D., J.D., M.P.H., CAS, FASAM, Director of the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment, SAMHSA; Theodora Binion-Taylor, Director, Division of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse, Illinois Department of Human Services; and a representative of a faith- and community-based organization in Illinois—will be held on June 8 from 8:30 to 11:45 a.m. The panel can accommodate a maximum of 75 participants.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND THE WORKSHOP?

The grant writing workshop will be geared toward organizations that have written some winning grant applications but have not been successful at receiving SAMHSA grants. It will help participants “fine tune” their applications so they can receive SAMHSA grants and also improve their overall success rate.

Organizations that meet all the following criteria may send one or more representatives to the workshop. Organizations must:

  • Be faith- or community-based organizations with 501(c)(3) status.

  • Have been providing relevant services for at least 2 years. Relevant services include culturally competent prevention, treatment, and recovery services related to substance abuse, mental illness, homelessness, or HIV/AIDS.

  • Be in compliance with all applicable local (city, county) and State/tribal licensing, accreditation, and certification requirements.

  • Have the organizational capacity to apply learning from the workshop and to write and submit applications for SAMHSA grants.

  • Have the infrastructure (e.g., appropriate staff, clients, facility) to receive and administer SAMHSA grants.

Individuals selected by the organizations to participate must meet the following criteria. Individuals must:

  • Possess strong writing skills.
  • Have the capability to apply learning from the workshop and to write applications for SAMHSA grants.
  • Be in a position to oversee and guide their organization’s grant seeking activity and make strategic decisions (e.g., an officer in the organization) or be in a position that requires contributions to grant applications, including researching opportunities, gathering data, strategizing, or writing sections (e.g., mid-level staff person, grant writer). Participation is not restricted to directors and program managers.
