INDUSTRY TRAINING IS ACCOMPLISHED THROUGH SHORT-TERM INTERNSHIPS WITH MARITIME INDUSTRY ORGANIZATIONS. 2. MMIT IS DESIGNED FOR OFFICERS WITH MARINE INSPECTION EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS. PAST MMIT SELECTEES HAVE CONDUCTED THEIR INDUSTRY TRAINING WITH THE FOLLOWING INDUSTRY GROUPS: OCEAN SHIPPING, OFFSHORE OIL INDUSTRY, GREAT LAKES SHIPPING, INLAND AND OFFSHORE TOWING, SHIPYARDS, SMALL PASSENGER VESSELS, AND CRUISE LINES. 3. MEPIT PROVIDES A UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY FOR EXPERIENCED OFFICERS WITH A MARINE ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION BACKGROUND (FOSCR AND/OR PI QUALIFIED) TO GAIN INSIGHT INTO DOMESTIC AND INTERNATIONAL POLLUTION MITIGATION OPERATIONS FROM INDUSTRY PERSPECTIVE. PAST MEPIT SELECTEES HAVE CONDUCTED THEIR INDUSTRY TRAINING IN THE FOLLOWING AREAS OF EMPHASIS: OIL SPILL REMOVAL, CONTINGENCY PLANNING, NATIONAL LEVEL ORGANIZATIONAL POLICY-MAKING, AND EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT. 4. THE PSIT PROGRAM AFFORDS EXPERIENCED PREVENTION AND RESPONSE OFFICERS A UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY TO EXPAND THEIR KNOWLEDGE OF COMMERCIAL PORT OPERATIONS. IN RECENT YEARS PSIT SELECTEES HAVE CONCENTRATED ON PORT SECURITY OPERATIONS. 5. THE IIT PROGRAM IS DESIGNED FOR EXPERIENCED AND QUALIFIED INVESTIGATING OFFICERS AND PROVIDES THEM THE OPPORTUNITY TO GAIN EXTENSIVE INSIGHT AND EXPOSURE INTO OTHER INVESTIGATIVE ENTITIES AS WELL AS MERCHANT VESSEL AND MARINE INDUSTRY OPERATIONS SO THAT THEY CAN MORE EFFECTIVELY AND EFFICIENTLY CONDUCT MARINE CASUALTY INVESTIGATIONS AND EVALUATE THE MYRIAD CAUSAL FACTORS CONTRIBUTING TO MARINE CASUALTIES. PAST IIT SELECTEES HAVE PARTICIPATED IN SHIP RIDER PROGRAMS AND PERFORMED SHORESIDE INDUSTRY TRAINING WITH SUCH ORGANIZATIONS AS THE NTSB, DEPT OF JUSTICE, VESSEL PILOT ASSOCIATIONS, PORT AUTHORITIES, SHIPPING COMPANIES, ADMIRALTY LAW FIRMS AND MARINE INSURERS. 6. IDEAL MARINE INDUSTRY TRAINING APPLICANTS ARE LIEUTENANTS AND LIEUTENANT COMMANDERS WHO HAVE AT LEAST FOUR YEARS OF PREVENTION OR RESPONSE FIELD EXPERIENCE AND WHO ARE AUTHORIZED TO WEAR THE MARINE SAFETY INSIGNIA. APPLICANTS SHOULD BE TOUR COMPLETE IN ASSIGNMENT YEAR 2009. 7. UNDER THE CURRENT PROGRAM, INDUSTRY TRAINING RANGES FROM FOUR TO SIX MONTHS AND IS CONDUCTED DURING THE APR-SEP TIMEFRAME. CIRCUMSTANCES SUCH AS SERVICE NEEDS, OPERATIONAL DEMANDS, INDIVIDUAL NEEDS, ETC., MAY MAKE IT DIFFICULT FOR SOME MEMBERS TO CONDUCT THEIR INDUSTRY TRAINING IN THE APR-SEP TIMEFRAME. IN SUCH INSTANCES, REQUESTS FOR ALTERNATIVE SCHEDULES MAY BE PRESENTED TO COMMANDANT CG-7411 FOR CONSIDERATION ON A CASE-BY-CASE BASIS. 8. AS PART OF THE COMMANDANT MARINE SAFETY ENHANCEMENT PLAN, AN EFFORT IS UNDERWAY TO REESTABLISH THE 1-YEAR TRAINING ALLOWANCE BILLETS (TABS) FOR INDUSTRY TRAINING. THESE 1-YEAR INDUSTRY TRAINING TABS WOULD COMPLEMENT THE EXISTING SHORT-TERM PROGRAM AND MAY BECOME AVAILABLE FOR THE CURRENT INDUSTRY TRAINING SELECTION CYCLE. FOR MMIT AND IIT, THE GOAL IS TO USE THE 1-YEAR INDUSTRY TRAINING TABS IN SUPPORT OF THE CENTERS OF EXPERTISE (COE) COMING ON LINE OVER THE NEXT 2 YEARS, IN ADDITION TO WORKING WITH THE TRADITIONAL MARINE INDUSTRY SPONSORS.
