Requirements for obtaining a second FHISW for Hurricanes Katrina, Rita and Wilma Relief.

  • Submit a Form TSP-76, Financial Hardship In-Service Withdrawal Request, to the TSP. (If you are a member of the uniformed services, use Form TSP-U-76.)
  • In Section II of the Form TSP-76, write in bold letters "HURRICANE KATRINA," "HURRICANE RITA," or "HURRICANE WILMA" and check the personal casualty block.
  • Fax your completed form to the TSP at (866) 817-5023.
  • The only requirements that have been waived are the ones stating that you can have only one (1) FHISW in a 6-month period and the one requiring the suspension of your Employee Contributions. Consequently, you can withdraw only your own TSP employee contributions and earnings on those contributions up to the amount of your personal casualty.

Example: Your account balance is $65,000. $31,000 is attributable to Employee Contributions, $26,000 is attributable to Government Matching Contributions, and $8,000 is attributable to Agency Automatic (1%) Contributions. In this example, the amount attributable to your personal casualty is $19,000; therefore, your FHISW is limited to $19,000. If the amount of the personal casualty is $37,000, your FHISW is limited to $31,000.

  • The deadline for receipt by the TSP of a second FHISW request based on Hurricanes Katrina, Rita, or Wilma is midnight on March 31, 2006.

Note.  Obtaining a second FHISW under these rules does not extend the current six-month non-contribution period.
