Vietnamese women have the highest incidence of invasive cervical cancer, and for those ages 55-69, the rate is ten times higher than for White women. This study focuses on Vietnamese women living in the eastern region of Pennsylvania and New Jersey – 75% of whom are characterized as medically underserved with low income and educational levels, a lack of knowledge about cervical cancer risks, are unaware of screening benefits and the health care system, and have limited access to culturally and linguistically appropriate regular medical care. The Center for Asian Health, ATECAR - Asian Community Cancer Network, Fox Chase Cancer Center, and Vietnamese community partners and health providers have joined forces in a five-year, large-scale, community-based participatory group randomized intervention trial to increase cervical cancer screening and reduce health system access barriers among high risk, medically underserved Vietnamese women.
