Behavioral Studies Regarding HPV and Cervical Cancer

An Appalachian Cervical Cancer Prevention Project

Investigator: Nancy Schoenberg, PhD

This project seeks to reduce the disproportionately high cervical cancer rates among middle age and older Appalachian women with low rates of Pap testing. It is utilizing a community participatory, tailored, faith-based intervention entitled "Faith Moves Mountains." A multidisciplinary team of social scientists, community leaders, physicians, and cancer control experts are evaluating the efficacy of the intervention using a grouprandomized experimental design. The results are expected to enable researchers and communities to better address the barriers that prevent rural women from receiving Pap tests and recommended follow-up care, and establish a community-based model for cancer prevention that can be extrapolated to other rural, underserved communities.
