WELCOME! The South Coast Air Quality Management District (AQMD) is the air pollution control agency for all of Orange County and the urban portions of Los Angeles, Riverside and San Bernardino counties.  This is the second most populated urban area in the United States and one of the smoggiest.  AQMD is committed to undertaking all necessary steps to protect public health from air pollution, with sensitivity to the impacts of its actions on the community and businesses.

Southland Air Toxics Study Shows Overall Decrease in
 Cancer Risk

A multi-year study on toxic air pollution in the Southland shows an overall 8 percent decrease in cancer risk from air pollution but increases in some areas of the region.

AQMD Strengthens Rules for Natural Gas-Fired Boilers and Heaters
AQMD has recently approved two measures that will require thousands of natural gas-fired boilers, steam generators and heaters operated by schools, hospitals, and industrial and commercial facilities throughout the region to meet more stringent emission limits.

AQMD Goes to the L.A. County Fair

2008 Leaf Blower Exchange Another Sell-Out
Professional gardeners did their part for clean air this summer by exchanging 1,500 older, dirtier leaf blowers for new, low-polluting and low-noise models, at ten events held across the Southland, helping to reduce 14 tons per year of smog-forming pollution.

Green Technology Conference to be held in Long Beach Sept. 14-16
“The Future is Green” Conference hosted by the California Air Pollution Control Officers Association will be held at the Long Beach Convention Center and feature exhibits and sessions on a variety of clean air technology topics and nearly 100 exhibitors and 40 clean fuel vehicles. Southland residents can now receive local air quality notifications via e-mail on a daily basis by signing up for EnviroFlash – a free system offered through the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in partnership with AQMD.  The system provides easy access to national and local air quality information.  Signing up is easy.  Click here for more information.
