Safety Management

Safety management is a systematic process that has the goal of reducing the number and severity of highway-related crashes by ensuring that all opportunities to improve highway safety are identified, considered, implemented as appropriate, and evaluated in all phases of highway planning, design, construction, maintenance, and operation and by providing information for selecting and implementing effective highway safety strategies and projects. A safety management process is the first step toward identifying highway safety problems and implementing effective solutions. An effective safety management processs results in improved decision making.

Safety management is built on a solid foundation of people who care about safety working together with a safety mind set. It brings together all interested parties with an interest in improvement of highway safety.  When these diverse safety interests work together, there is an integrated approach to safety planning and programs.  This ensures that safety is given adequate consideration in transportation decision making.
