Pictures from the GOES Imager are used to monitor the rapidly changing aspects of clouds such as height, thickness, cloudtop temperature, and winds. Scientists in Goddard's Laboratory for Atmospheres use these images during field campaigns in the following ways:

From: alevy@AMERICATV.com.pe To: Dennis.F.Chesters@nasa.gov Subject: WHY WE NEED THE GOES-8 IMAGERY Date: Mon, 16 Oct 2000 10:36:47 -0500 THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR YOUR PROMPT REPLY MISTER CHESTERS. I WANT YOU TO KNOW SOMETHING ABOUT BOTH, OUR INTEREST AND THE USE WE GIVE TO THE GOES-8 IMAGERY. I PERSONALLY CONDUCT THE ONLY TV WEATHER SHOW IN PERU. OUR NETWORK - AMERICA TV - THE LARGEST IN THE COUNTRY, ALSO PROVIDES WEATHER FORECASTS AND PRECIPITATION OUTLOOKS TO SEVERAL MINOR PLACES ALONG THE EASTERN ANDEAN FOOTHILLS WHERE NEW HIGHWAYS ARE CONQUERING NEW AREAS FOR THE ECONOMY. ALTHOUGH WE CANNOT AFFORD A GOES DOWNLINK STATION, THE USE OF THE IMAGERY PROVIDED IN THE WEB,PLUS THE GOES.NAV SOFTWARE THAT WE RAN HERE ARE VERY GOOD ELEMENTS TO TRACK THE STORMS ALONG THE ABOVE MENTIONED AREA. IT IS QUITE CRITICAL TO KNOW IN ADVANCE WHAT IS GOING ON BECAUSE THE FLASH FLOODS THAT HAPPEN THERE DUE TO THE STORMS USUALLY COMPROMISE HUMAN LIVES AND EXPENSIVE CONSTRUCTION MACHINERY. SO, IF THERE IS A WAY - AN FTP OR HTTP ADDRESS - WHERE WE CAN OBTAIN CONTINUOUS GOES-8 COVERAGE. PLEASE LET US KNOW.YOU WILL BE SERVING THIS LOVELY COUNTRY. ONCE AGAIN. THANK YOU VERY MUCH...
